6. What is a VOF?

The VOF (Vennootschap Onder Firma / Société en Nom Collectif) is the fastest and cheapest way to start a business with a partner. A private deed is sufficient, costs under €200. Popular with husband-and-wife teams, siblings in construction or trade, freelancer combos and small webshops. Ideal if you fully trust each other and want to keep things simple.

The downside: all partners have unlimited and joint liability. But for many duo-starters, the simplicity outweighs the risk. No notary, no annual accounts to publish, flexible contributions (labour, money or goods, no minimum). Many VOFs are a deliberate test phase: prove your concept together, and switch to a BV once you grow.
